Morocco's Mariem Alaoui Selsouli was one of the favorites to win the Olympic women's 1500m gold medal. But she has now failed a drug test and been ruled out of the Games.
The world athletics body said Wednesday the 28-year-old had tested positive for a banned diuretic. Selsouli was the silver medalist at the World Indoor Championships in Istanbul in March. She had also taken part in the Paris Diamond League meeting on July 6, where she had set a record time of 3 minutes 56.15 seconds. Selsouli has already served a two-year suspension from 2009 to 2011 for an earlier doping offence. She now faces a lifetime ban.
