EU finance ministers have agreed to give Spain an extra year to reduce its budget deficit to below the EU’s public limit of 3 percent of GDP.
On the second day of their meeting in Brussels on Tuesday, minsters extended Spain’s deadline to 2014. They also published revised year-by-year deficit targets for Spain.... 6.3 percent of GDP in 2012, 4.5 percent in 2013 and 2.8 percent by the end of 2014.
Cyprus currently holds the rotating EU presidency... and its Finance Minister, Vassos Shiarly, says the Spanish government has completed many of the objectives set by the European Union between 2009 and now. Recent estimates by the European Commission show Spain’s fiscal deficit currently standing at 6.3 percent... that’s higher than the previous forecast of 5.3%.
