German Chancellor Angela Merkel says she will campaign for a financial transaction tax. Monday’s announcement came after the center-left Social Democrats linked progress on the tax and growth-boosting measures to their approval for the EU fiscal pact and for the euro bailout fund.
Angela Merkel, German Chancellor, said, "On the one hand we need functioning banks, and Frankfurt stands for that, on the other hand, we also need some justice in the financial sector. And that is why we need a financial transaction tax. And that is why the federal government, as agreed with the opposition, will campaign for it."
