A wide variety of films are being shown at the festival, from romance films like the "Confession of a Child of the Century" to stories about conflicts such as "Lawless". Together they are portraying multi-faceted aspects of the art of film.
"Confession of a Child of the Century", tells a story of betrayal between lovers and heartache, but also of healing and putting right. And it seems other things also needed to be put right when the leading actor Pete Doherty walked the carpet.
Pete Doherty, actor, said, "I'm obviously a great actor but when it comes to red carpet, it's like to be honest, it's not really happening for the moment. In fact, we have to redo it. We've been asked to re-walk the red carpet for the first time in Cannes history."
The movie "Lawless" is set almost 100 years ago in the Eastern part of the US. It tells the story of a trio of bootlegging brothers from the Appalachians protecting their backwoods freedom from a corrupt federal agent from Chicago. The film highlights their spirit of bravery and brotherly affection.
(L-R) Tom Hardy, Jessica Chastain and Shia LaBeouf arrive for the screening of
"Lawless" at the 65th Cannes film festival on May 19.
John Hillcoat, director of "Lawless", said, "The cast carried the spirit through and has a lot of layers which I like, you know, from the big themes of immortality and invincibility as a nation or an individual.
Another movie that's exploring profound topics is the movie "Amour", directed by Austrian director Michael Haneke. The movie follows an elderly married couple of former music teachers, who are enjoying a comfortable retirement in Paris before one of them, suffers a stroke.
The subject of the end of life is rarely tackled on the cinema and critics are calling it beautiful yet devastating as tears flowed at the press screening. The Cannes Film Festival will end with the announcement of the winner of the coveted Palme d’Or on Sunday, and it will certainly be a beautiful but not devastating end.
