Greek's Leftist SYRIZA Party leader Alexis Tsipras has failed to form a coalition government. This follows meetings with party leaders, including conservative New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras and Socialist PASOK leader Evangelos Venizelos.
Tsipras criticized Samaras and Venizelos for refusing to reject the bailout agreement.
Alexis Tsipras, head of the Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) exits the Presidential
Palace after his meeting with Greek President Karolos Papoulias, to formally take the
mandate to form a coalition government in Athens, Tuesday, May 8, 2012.
The baton now passes to Venizelos who says he would continue efforts to form a government when he receives a mandate from the country’s president on Thursday. New Democracy Party leader Antonis Samaras also did not find common ground with Tsipras.
A day earlier Tsipras had demanded that Samaras and Venizelos tear up their 130-billion euro bailout deal with the EU and IMF. Samaras said this would be "a certain and immediate disaster". Tsipras had also met with other party leaders that were elected in Sunday’s vote, but only one other leftist party was willing to consider cooperation.
