Japan will carry out new safety "stress tests" ahead of restarting 35 nuclear plants left idle in the wake of the tsunami-triggered crisis.
The government has ordered safety checks for all of Japan's 54 nuclear reactors, following the world's worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl. Only 19 reactors are currently operating, causing electricity shortages amid the sweltering heat. The initial stage of the tests will examine whether the reactors can withstand massive earthquakes and tsunamis.
Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said, "The government has devised a new set of standards upon which we can test the safety of Nuclear Power stations. This is aimed at guaranteeing the safety of nuclear power generation and at gaining the trust of the general population in the safety of nuclear facilities."
