Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said his country will not recognize the result of an upcoming European vote on freezing negotiations with Turkey over its accession to the European Union.
Erdogan said, "Tomorrow there is going to be a meeting in the European Parliament and they are allegedly going to vote on Turkey's EU membership talks. Let me say this in advance, speaking from here, addressing the audience of the world watching on their screens: Whatever the result is, in our eyes, this vote has no value."
The European Parliament called for a temporary freeze on accession talks with Turkey on Tuesday. They're expected to vote on an advisory resolution on Thursday.
EU nations have voiced serious concerns over the Turkish government's ruthless response to the failed military coup in July.
Despite this, the bloc is struggling to reach a common stance that would balance their need for Ankara's continued support in stopping thousands of refugees heading to Europe, with their concerns about rights abuses.
